Community Show: Fun at the Coast

“Fun at the Coast” – Capture the playful nature that our beautiful coast offers.  You can express your creative side by capturing nature, activities you love or a sense of calm you get when you are at the coast.  Let you imagination go wild and have fun with your art!

RULES OF ENTRY:

Accepted Media:    

All 2-D media, including textiles, fiber art, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing, print making (artist- pulled prints only), collage, assemblage mixed media, encaustic, “Glass & Ceramics” (must be under15 lbs).  No photography or video, please.

Size Limitations:

Artworks not to exceed 26”, outside dimension in any one direction, including frame.

 All work to be hung on the wall must be framed or on gallery wrap canvas; including a wire hanger (no saw tooth hangers please).  

 Entry Fees:  

The non-refundable fees to exhibit are: $10 for first piece, $5 for the second piece and $5 for the third piece.  

Sale of Work:

All work MUST be for sale. Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio retains a 25% commission on all sales for this exhibition; please price your work accordingly.

 Awards:  

Susan Lehman has graciously agreed to judge this show. Susan graduated with high distinction in Textile Arts from California College of the Arts and Post-graduate work with a fifth-year teaching credential from University of the Pacific. Susan has consistently submitted her work in exhibitions since 1998, has taught workshops since 2006, as well as curatorial experience since 2007.

 Prizes will be $50 first place, $25 second place, $15 third place awards, plus awards of Honorable Mention ribbons.  A “People’s Choice Award” will be decided by public ballot; the winner to receive a one-month exhibition as a Featured Artist at Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio, during 2025.

 Artist Schedule:  

Drop Off – Sunday April 28 & Monday April 29 from 11 to 4 PM

1 to 3 pieces of art with paperwork and fees (cash or check made out to Art by the Sea Gallery)

If Shipping Artwork:

- Work must be shipped to arrive by April 29, 2024

-  Please prepay return shipping and include all paperwork and fees.

Josie Keating’s Story

josie’sARTLAB started in 2014 when I first taught a guided painting event for a fundraiser at my children’s school. Every time they had one of these events, folks would clammer for more. She had been teaching painting and drawing at SWOCC since 2009 but this was different. This was soooo much fun. People not only enjoyed the end result but the PROCESS (well, once they got used to the idea that sometimes things look worse before they look better). And Josie noticed how much she enjoyed helping people tap into a creativity that sometimes surprised them.

Josie opened her location at 1964 Sherman Ave in January 2017, even though she was still teaching at SWOCC, the Director of Art Education at the Coos Art Museum and had three daughters at home. As she gained her footing and confidence, she shed the other jobs and began expanding my curriculum to other types of classes: beginning painting classes, figure drawing sessions, art journaling, kids classes and anything else that caught my interest.

In March of 2020, Josie was ready to see what would happen if she focused all my energies onto the LAB. Of course, we all know the hitch that was thrown in that get-a-long. Well that hitch gave her the opportunity to explore avenues I hadn’t considered: online classes,
